Apple iPad announced

Steve Jobs proudly presented the newest gadget that will have all the apple fans mesmerised.

The much awaited iPad, will start to be sold in March for Wi-Fi models and in April for G3 model.

The appearance is like a much enlarged iPhone even the interface. It will support the apps just like iPhone and iPod do.

As the tech side, it’s still low with 16 or maximum up to 32 Gigs flash drive when taking into consideration the $500, so it will be more like a netbook competitor rather than a laptop competitor (they have the Macbook for this) since it’s more designed for the internet daily tasks, yet it will still be an object of desire of this year.

The iPad can be attached to a recharging to dock with a full featured keyboard for easy typing when not on the go.

Learning HTML for Beginners – Part 1

Hi!, this is part 1 of a series of tutorials about HTML in which I intend to introduce to you in small steps every week. Enjoy the first one :)

HTML stands for Hypertext Mark-up Language, the most used language for making up a webpage.

A webpage can be completley written by HTML using only a text editor software although if you intend to make a compliacted dynamic website, you might begin thinking to invest in a software like Adobe Dreamweaver.
In this tutorials I will teach you how to make a very simple webpage using a text editor however, the steps used here can be used exactly the same for any other software.

If you want to peek at any website’s HMTL you can easily do so clicking on “View” menu and then  “source” on IE. This might eventually help you to get to know HTML better.

The Very Basics

In HTML, everything is defined in tags. Tags are some letters enclose in <>.

For example if you want a piece of text to be shown in bold, you have to begin with the bold tag which is <b> “place text here without the quotes” and then finish off by writing the closing tag which is always like the beginning  but with a / in front of the letter. In our case, the closing tag is </b>

  • The head

An HTML document always stars off with <html> and followed immediately with <head> then </head> to close the head section and finally, in the very end of the webpage write </html> to close the HTML section. .

  • The title

Every book has a title, even songs and essays do. So why not even a webpage? The title of a webpage is shown in the title caption bar. To make a title for your website add: “<title>” followed by your  title and then clsoing off using </title>

  • Setting Importance

Not all the sub-titles or text have the same importance. For example, you want to divide a list into 2 categories however you want to divide again those two categories into other subcategories and so on. The first catergory is more important than the second sub-category and the thir sub-category has less importance than the second one and so on.

To show this difference in importance, HTML uses 6 different heading styles. H1 is the most important  while H6 is the least important.

To make a line of text with the H1 style just enclose your text in <h1></h1> tags. This is done for the rest of the heading styles.

SimplicITy – A new PC aimed at older people

Well, they say the new generations are the computer-literate generations. And they are quite right, but the guys Wessex Computers decided that older generations need not be left out.

The company announced the availability of SimplicITy a computer for older people which lives up to its name. The Operating System is based on Linux, a free operating system. This operating system is made in such a way to be as simple as possible, such to an extend that is only has 6 big buttons with straightforward words. If you want to browse the internet, thenyou just have to press the ‘browse the web button’ for a web browser to open without any need of knowing or searching for the name of the browser. The same thing holds for the other five buttons which let you write documents, chat and other useful stuff, always the most simplified way possible.

The computer comes pre-loaded with 17 video tutorials for the user to learn how to use his or her computer. They are all presented by the familiar face of the television presenter Valerie Singleton. Singleton is also the owner of the website discount-age.com aimed at older people which is in partnership for the production of these PCs.

Wikipedia to launch page controls

The online encyclopaedia Wikipedia is on the cusp of launching a major revamp to how people contribute to some pages.

The site will require that revisions to pages about living people and some organisations be approved by an editor.

This would be a radical shift for the site, which ostensibly allows anyone to make changes to almost any entry.

The two-month trial, which has proved controversial with some contributors, will start in the next “couple of weeks”, according to a spokesperson.

“I’m sure it will spark some controversy,” Mike Peel of Wikimedia UK, a subsidiary of the organisation which operates Wikipedia, told BBC News.

However, he said, the trial had been approved in an an online poll, with 80% of 259 users in favour of the trial.

“The decision to run this trial was made by the users of the English Wikipedia, rather than being imposed.”

The proposal was first outlined by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales in January this year. It was met by a storm of protests from Wikipedia users who claimed the system had been poorly thought out or would create extra work.

‘Lock down’

The two-month trial will test a system of “flagged revisions” on the English-language Wikipedia site.

This would mean any changes made by a new or unknown user would have to be approved by one of the site’s editors before the changes were published.

Whilst the changes are being mulled over, readers will be directed to earlier versions of the article.

Wikimedia said the system was “essentially a buffer, to reduce the visibility and impact of vandalism on these articles”.

There have been several high-profile edits to pages that have given false or misleading information about a person.

For example, in January this year the page of US Senator Robert Byrd falsely reported that he had died.

If a page has a number of controversial edits or is repeatedly vandalised, editors can lock a page, so that it cannot be edited by everyone.

For example, following initial reports of the death of Michael Jackson, editors had to lock down two pages to stop speculation about what had caused his death.

“For these articles, flagged protection will actually make them more open,” said Mr Peel.

The decision had been made to focus on the pages of living people, he said, because they were the “most high-profile pages with the highest probability of causing harm”.

“[The trial] may also be extended to organisations which are currently operating,” he added.

The system has already been in operation on the German version of Wikipedia for more than a year.

The changes to the English language site – which now has more than 3m pages – will be rolled out in the coming weeks, said Mr Peel.

The changes will be discussed in Buenos Aires this week at the annual Wikimania conference.

Apple schedules OS update release

Snow Leopard

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is due for release on 28 August

Apple has confirmed that its new operating system, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, will be released on 28 August.

Snow Leopard is Apple’s biggest operating system update since the firm moved from the “Classic” OS in 2001.

Apple said the new operating system (OS) is almost half the size of previous versions, freeing up to 7GB of drive space once installed.

Snow Leopard is currently the number two best seller on Amazon.com and will retail at £25 in the UK ($29 in US).

The release had been slated for September but the firm announced the revised release date on Monday.

The new version updates on the old 10.5.7 Leopard OS and Apple say that its “support for 64-bit processors makes use of large amounts of RAM, increases performance and improves security while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications”.

“Snow Leopard builds on our most successful operating system ever and we’re happy to get it to users earlier than expected,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering.

Apple’s main thrust has been on improving the OS performance, rather than creating new features for the user.

The OS will also come with built-in support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 that Apple says will allow users to employ Snow Leopard’s mail, contacts, and calendar applications while accessing Windows-based network services.

Myspace Buys iLike

MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta has confirmed that MySpace has acquired iLike, a two-year-old social-music application company that claims 50 million unique users.

The future of the relations with iLike and Facebook are still to be known since most of the users of iLike were gained from Facebook but now that they are acquired by their major rival, Facebook can block or restric tthe application at any time.

Owen Van Natta is confident that the new aquisition will continue to make Myspace a center of entertainment. He also said that Myspace want iLike not only play music but also films and games.

This acquisition might help Myspace become again the number 1 social site after it was superseded by facebook earlier this year.

Study finds that IE 8 is the most secure browser

This week was a very glorious day for the folks at Microsoft when a study found out that it’s the safest browser out passing the increasingly popular Firefox 3.

ieAccording to the study, while IE 8 was capable of fending off 83% of live attacks, firefox (which came second place) could block about 67% of all the live attacks. Safari 4 on the other hand provided the poorest level of protection.

The team behind IE are struggling to convince people to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 which is now 10 years old to thee new Internet Explorer 8 which provides the latest technology.

The validity of this report however, is being disputed due to the speculation that the study performed by the NSS labs was funded completely by Microsoft which could cast some bias on the results.
